Abstract:
Rogue waves are anomalously high waves which unexpectedly occur on the sea surface.
They attracted the interest of researchers, from oceanographers to mathematicians, at the
turn of the XX-XXI centuries. Results of investigation of this phenomenon are discussed
in this review: the physical mechanisms of the rogue wave generation and the
corresponding mathematical models; the available field data; results of the direct
numerical simulation and of laboratory experiments; new approaches to modeling and
forecasting extreme sea waves.
Keywords:
Rogue waves, modulation instability, nonlinear Schrodinger equation.
